Michif, Cree, Language Resources

Michif, Cree, First Voices Resources

Lori Malone
The first Resource I would suggest for basic Michif phraseology is:

http://www.metisresourcecentre.mb.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74&Itemid=20

From Native Languages of the Americas (great resource, please explore): Michif (Mitchif, Metis Creole, French Cree)

http://www.native-languages.org/michif.htm

I will update this information as time permits!

Written and Verbal Plains Cree available from First Voices website includes audio clips, phrases and pictures.

This is quite old, but try looking for a copy of Dr. Anne Anderson's Métis Cree Dictionary ISBN 1-55520-001-9 from Duval House Publishing.

Move Over Metis!

Once again our leaders are at each other's throats.  You would think that over the last 100 years, some progress would have been made utilizing life development skills.

We must get along and get it done.
I am severely disappointed in Bruce and in Clem. I agree that the letter of the law must be adhered to. Clem, unless there was ratification and provision for an extended term of office as President of the Metis Nation, I agree that you must step down.

Bruce, if you were elected fairly by the majority of MN Leaders, then you must indeed take hold of the reins.

Saying this however, leads me to continuity. I would interject that Clem should remain as Vice-President as he was a dynamic voice and advocate for the Metis in Canada. He is also a lawyer and has a unique perspective to advance the cause of our people.

The MMF wants Clem in charge so they can hold onto their own precarious positions of power. That is not a sufficient reason for stonewalling and creating further problems for the Metis People.

All of you do us a great disservice by acting in this inappropriate and school yard behaviour. I respectfully ask that you consider the above a solution to solve our current dilemna as a people and one the Federal Government will be pleased to work with.

Please quit allowing your EQ (emotion quota) to run rampant and utilize the IQ (intellegence quota) I know you both possess to work in partnership and solve the current funding freeze for our Nation.

This "blog is from 2007" and I am finally able to "publish" it .... go figure, do things always circle around ....  hmmmm ....

Same Old, Same Old plus EVENTS for November 2008

I haven't posted in quite some time due to my "growing" family and community activities. Let me be honest, also because my laptop died (Vid card on Motherboard not replaceable *sigh*) and I don't do well sitting for extended periods.

It seems that no matter how much things change, some things remain the same. I along with many others decided to stay out of Métis politics. When I see the "rumblings of our discontent" I still shake my head at the "doings" of some folk.

On a positive note, there are a few activities happening in the Fraser Valley this month(November 2008) which were sent via email:

  1. "...that the 'Friends of Fort Langley' are interested in having Metis presence in their November 15th. Fort Langley Parade. This event only lasts 1.5 hrs. and it is important that their is some efforts being made for some Metis to attend. To date there are No Metis participants in this very important parade.

The contact info for this Fort Langley event is: Jennifer Johnson 604.888.3943

E-mail: fotf@uniserve.com WWW: www.fofl.net ...."

2. "Fraser Valley Métis Association proudly presents

Michif Matters Most when ...

  1. We learn to follow and accept our own constitution and by-laws
  2. We learn that positions of trust are not our exclusive province
  3. We learn that democracy is valid and our people have a voice
  4. We learn that an election is only for a "term"
  5. We learn and accept that another election will come again
  6. We learn to adhere to our own voice in self-governance
  7. We learn that many Metis have good ideas, not just our own
  8. We learn that only those strong enough to have a voice will be heard
